TimeGlider: Instructions

Adding Events to Your Timeline

First, make sure the timeline you're working on is selected and visible on the screen. See "displaying timelines" in case you need help. It also might be a good idea to set the focus of the timeline to the approximate date of the event you will enter.

There are a couple ways to add an event:

  1. Double-click anywhere on the screen (not on another event) and the date and approximate time of where you clicked will appear in the "create new event" panel.
  2. Click the "add event" button in the application header. The filled-in date will be today's date.

Once the "add event" panel comes up, you need to

  1. Choose a short title for the event. The event title will appear on the timeline.
  2. Make sure the start date and time is filled in correctly (there are pre-filled date fields). The start date and time will determine the placement of the event on the timeline.
  3. Choose a timeline or timelines to which this event belongs. This determines on which timeline(s) this event will appear.

You may also:

  1. Add a description for the event. This is an additional layer of detail, supporting the event title. When browsing the timeline in view mode you can double click on the event title to bring up a panel that contains the event detail text.
  2. Make the event a span by clicking the "event span?" checkbox, then filling in the end-date.
  3. Make sure your current timezone setting corresponds to the times entered.
  4. Fill in a web link URL, starting with "http://. If you do this you'll notice a 'Link' button appear on the panel with the event description. If you click on the link it will take you to the URL you have entered here.
  5. Choose an icon. Icons appear next to the event title on the timeline. They are a useful way of visually categorizing linked events.

Then, click the "enter" button.

If you want to enter another event right away, check the "Add another event" check box, otherwise, the editing panel will disappear, and you will see the event you just entered.

In the future, there will be an option to edit the "thresholds" of the event: between which zoom levels the event appears. See more at thresholds.
