TimeGlider: Instructions

Some Frequently asked questions

How do I get started?
You have already given your first timeline a name.  When you first get to the application, click on the timeline's title, then click 'Add Event'. From there, enter a title, description, time and, if you want, select an icon. You can also add a link to another web site where a user can go for more information, and you can also add a small image. Click 'enter' when you are done.

How do I publish a timeline?
In the Flash interface, there is a panel called "timelines", and to the right of each timeline title is a green arrow. Pressing on this opens a whole set of options, including "link/embed". Clicking on that provides you with first, a link that people can use to see (in read-only form) your timeline. Second, there is an "embed code" (using the iframe element) that will allow you to embed the timeline on your website, blog, or whathaveyou. To see what read-only viewers will see, click the "wrench" on the upper right, then select 'preview mode'.  Click here to find out more.

How do I add an image?
Once the event editing window has come up, click on the word "image". You can then either add a link to an image stored on another web site, or upload an image of your own. To upload an image click 'Upload' and then select the file from your hard disk. This will add the image to your TimeGlider image library. Then click 'Open Library' to select the image from your library. Read more here.

What kinds of short-cuts are there?
• To create an event simply double click anywhere on the screen.
• To move an image around on the timeline, hold down the space bar and drag it with your mouse. (This does not yet work with event spans — only events that have the same start and end dates.)

Can I have more than one timeline open at once?
Yes: you can view timelines above and below the timeline 'ruler' in the middle of the screen. Click on the "timelines" header to see a list of all the timelines you have created. By clicking on the green 'options' button you can add the timeline to either the north (top) or south (bottom) of the ruler. To add a timeline without changing the zoom or time-focus, click the "and keep focus" to the right of the corresponding addition button.  You first might need to unlock the "ruler" at the lower left of the screen.
