Thresholds are handy little numbers to prevent events from stacking too high when a timeline is zoomed out. There are 61 zoom levels (from 0 to 60): Low and high thresholds correspond to these numbers.
The high threshold indicates the zoom level above which an event or image will disappear.
The low threshold is the zoom level below which a particular event will disappear.
One could think of an event or image's high threshold as being a measure of importance. For example, if an event is so important that it should show up at the century-level (but not higher), it would have a high threshold of roughly 50.
Basically, you don't need to worry about thresholds unless you want to be able to view the timeline zoomed out at a wide scope, and events are stacking too high.
